Project Topic: School Garden Sign With a Labeled Map
1. Introduction – Give a general description of your overall topic and briefly
describe your project goals.
We would like to create a main sign for our school’s garden, named “WGHS GOLD”. It would feature the layout of the school and its garden as well as planter boxes and various plants around the school.
What motivated you to choose this topic?
We were motivated to choose this topic because we wanted to interest more people in the school gardens. Upon seeing the signs, they will not only learn about what grows on campus, they may feel inspired to get involved with the garden. WGHS is a community, and what better way to get multiple people involved? However, the first step is introducing what the garden has to offer through signs first. That is what we would like to do as a project.
What skills and knowledge do you already possess about this topic?
We are familiar with some of the plants already planted in the garden or around the school. After watching the TED Talks and other various videos you have shown us, we are familiar with plants and their vital roles that they play on campus. Chloe also already possesses many the skills needed to make the signs.
What prior experience, if any, have you had that will help you with this project?
We both had worked with constructing before, including working with wood. We are both familiar with gardens and some of the common plant species.
How do you plan to interact with your classmates and others on campus during the project?
We plan raise awareness of the garden and the importance of gardens in our community through those around us while we work on our project.
What do you plan to learn?
Not only will we learn what plants grow on our school campus, other people can easily find and access them with the map. Perhaps this will spark their interests and they can learn from what the school garden has to offer as well. We will also learn many new skills that may be very beneficial later on in life.
What do you expect to learn from this project (ex: technical skills, expanded
knowledge of your topic, planning and organizing skills, etc.)?
We expect to learn about and find out all of the plants that grow on our school campus. We will learn more about time management and organizational skills. This will open up our eyes and mind on how big projects are executed from start to finish.
2. Plan of your project – What is your estimated timeline to complete the project
with anticipated step-by-step weekly dates?
The project’s deadline will be set around the end of April / the beginning of May.
Week 1:
- Purchase supplies needed for project
- Wood, poster paper, paint, plastic sheets, tools, etc.
- Write out a detailed work schedule
- Start the rough draft of the map
- Start rough draft of the construction of the sign (begin constructing if possible)
- Start the composition of information on sign(s)?
Week 2:
- Purchase any more necessary supplies
- Continue progress on map drawing
- Continue rough draft of construction of sign and begin constructing
- Brainstorm roof construction / experiment
Week 3:
- Continue progress on map drawing
- Continue rough draft of construction of sign and begin constructing
- Wood construction
Who will be involved in your project? What is the (roughly estimated) cost of your project? What resources will you need to complete your project?
Jasmine and Chloe will be the students responsible for carrying out this project, with some help from parents while using certain tools. The estimated cost is $100. We will be using wood, plastic sheets, and poster boards for the makeup of our final product as well as other materials that will be determined later as we see needed.
3. Conclusion
What product will you create as a result of your new knowledge and skills?
How will you convey your experience to the class? What visual aids will you use
to support your presentation?
As a result of this project we will have a sign that engages people to become involved in the school garden and it will label the planter boxes so that others can learn what they are being used for. We will convey our experience by putting together a presentation of our journey during this project that will include pictures, possibly a video, and maybe even the completed signs.
